The True Faces of Refugees

In this chaotic and chilling political environment, we as a nation have stepped into as the new President has taken office, leaves a lingering feeling of sadness and powerlessness. As a Mexican-American living in the U.S.- the land of the free and the land of immigrants- I am afraid. I had not experienced this type of fear first hand till this past November 2016, when Trump was elected to the presidency. According to the Southern poverty law center a rise in rascist hate crimes have been recorded and fear has taken the country into its grips.  I had read it many times on the news, in our own American history during the civil rights movement. An empath by nature- my heart would cry tears of sadness for my brothers and sisters who endured so much in a very dark and unjust history. Not to mention our Jewish brothers and sisters who endured the largest extermination, one group of people had ever encountered in the past. Our brothers and sisters in the Middle east and Africa suffer on a daily basis and must live in a world of terror, and so many just want their families to be safe and sound and put them out of harm’s way. So many refugees who have been persecuted and terrorized, such as Yaman’s story of survival of how he and his family made it out alive when others were not so lucky.

We must realize- even though we look different- we are more similar than what we think. We all want to live in a loving, accepting and just world- isn’t that land the United States? A land that in its very foundation- laying down its first cornerstone- paved the nation into a democratic land, free from persecution, freedom from religious persecution and freedom of thought and free to be.  Not one person in this great nation has more rights than others to be here…this is a country of immigrants, whether your a first, second, third generation American, we are all immigrants…it is a country of dreams, a country of freedom, a country of hope, which seems to shatter as the days progress into this presidency that seems to be filled with a racist, misogynist, xenophobic rhetoric- a rhetoric that eerily mirrors Nazi Germany.

No matter who you voted for, what your politics are, at this point, that doesn’t matter, what matters is that we shift as people, and shift this feeling of hate, into a feeling of LOVE.

Just as Martin Luther King Jr. said not so long ago- his words still resonate in our psyche and memory. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

We must remember these words now…be love rather than hate, be accepting rather than rejecting, be kind rather than mean-spirited, be forgiving rather than punishing, be light rather than darkness, be one rather than dividing. Becuase the sooner we realize we can be one nation, one world living in peace and love, and the only way to do that is by accepting each other as we are, with all out beautiful differences that make this world so diverse and so unique. We are a beautiful rainbow in all its splendor. Let us come together as ONE world tribe to tear down walls and build bridges instead.

With love and light,

Mariela

This new year…BE the change you want to see in this world

Be the change you want to see in this world

Be the change you want to see in this world

Happy New Year 2015!! I wish that you may have a year full of blessings, happiness, love and light! I love new years, because they are times of reflection. It is a time when we decide what we can change within us to become better and to become the best versions of ourselves. While many new year resolutions are aimed towards losing weight, saving more money, buying a new car, etc., and while all resolutions have a place in our holistic self that will make all parts of our life better and thus make us better. It all starts with US. We decide to BE. To be what? You may ask. I simply say: “Be the best you”. Such as the wise Gandhi once said “Be the change you seek to see in this world.” He was not far from the truth and in fact, this is what true change is all about. We need to be the best versions of ourselves. We all know what that means. We know the areas we might need to work on and most importantly, only we know what we must do to cleanse ourselves from the past and start anew with new light and new force, so we can shine once more and leave our mark in this world (or why not? In this universe).

So this new year, let it be about YOU. Do not worry what others need to do or change. That is not up to us. But what we can do and focus is on our own life, our own little universe. This we can control, and hopefully one good choice, will lead to another, and another and like a domino effect cause an expansion of light and love all around us that will not only touch your family, friends, community, but the entire world and push towards the collective force that will pave the way to change our entire universe. And it starts with you. Do it my friend. Take the first step and BE THE CHANGE!

Love and light,

Mariela

What will it take for us to Thrive?

Sometimes we think that we cannot do much more for our planet and the feeling of impotence lingers and settles in our psyche until it clouds our thoughts and attitude. We need to realize that we are much more powerful and our actions– even small ones –can pave the way for change.

If you have not seen the  documentary THRIVE, I  urge you to get up (yes- right now- I promise you won’t be disappointed), pop some yummy popcorn or prepare a fruit and veggie platter (which would be my choice 🙂 ) and watch this life changing film! Foster Gamble and his lovely wife Kimberly have created this unconventional documentary that lifts the veil on what’s “really” going on in our world by following the money upstream – uncovering the global consolidation of power in nearly every aspect of our lives.

The documentary weaves together breakthroughs in science, consciousness and activism, THRIVE offers real solutions, empowering us with unprecedented and bold strategies for reclaiming our lives and our future.

So if you want to Thrive and make a difference- now is your chance. Go to their website where  you can be a part of their collective change:

I end this entry with a phrase I love and fits perfectly for this occasion:

“Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” ― Mahatma Gandhi.
